Zig Zag

How do I fiz a zig/zag stitch problem.?

I have a Kenmore (3 years old) sewing machine that has been great until now. When i zig zag stitch, it misses a lot of stitches and eventually shreads the thread- good quality thread. The top stitches look ok, the the bottom stitches look bad. Any ideas? Maybe Tension prob? Thanks,

besides what the earlier poster suggested, here are a few more tips.
check to see at what width you’ve set the overlock – if it is at the very extreme, bring it back a notch. sometimes, the extreme settings cause errors/untidiness.
have you changed fabrics? does the error occur in any/all types of fabric? if it works fine on some fabrics but not on others, here’s a very handy tip : place strips of newspaper or kitchen roll under the stitching line under the fabric. this enables the smooth movement of fabric & neat, even stitches. after you’ve finished, just rip off the paper & no-one will be the wiser
check to see whether all the parts of the machine are intact, no breakage inside. oil your machine.
and as you’ve mentioned yourself, check the tension.
