Wide Red
if i want the flag to have the white and red regions have the same area, how wide should the red strip be?
St. George’s Banner’s red cross is the same width both ways. Let’s say that the flag is 4 feet by 3 feet. If I want to make this flag so that the white and red regions have the same area, how wide should the red stripe be? (Same question as the above)
Suppose you have a flag of width a and height b. If St. George’s Cross has a width of w, the area of the Cross will be w·a+w·b-w² (two rectangles, minus the square in the middle, which is counted twice). The area of the flag is obviously a·b, so you get:
a·b/2=w·a+w·b-w² or
w²-(a+b)·w+a·b/2=0 .
Solve this in w to get a solution for the width.
