How Do Bunny Rabbits Sell Batteries?
The retort to the question is very simple: through advertising. Back in 1973 Duracell, a well-known brand of batteries introduced a new advertising campaign using several pink anthropomorphic rabbits powered by batteries. Over the years there have been some really fun commercials shown in different countries and languages including the UK, Mexico, Germany, Australia and Japan amongst many.
The notion behind the commercials is that the pink bunnies that are powered by Duracell batteries, last longer than other ordinary batteries. In the first commercials the bunnies were shown banging drums. However, as time went on the adverts got more sophisticated. The commercials have shown pink bunnies climbing up mountains, working out in the gym, at the World Cup and even skywalking.
Interestingly we do not see the Duracell bunnies in the United States anymore even though they were originally trademarked for us in the US and other countries. This is because Duracell didn’t renew its trademark in the USA and as a result the company Energizer gained the rights to use the bunnies in their advertising campaigns. The Energizer adverts were very similar to the original Duracell ones with bunnies banging drums. The Energizer bunnies did look somewhat different to the Duracell bunnies! The Energizer bunny’s body was a different shape, the ears were larger and in a different shade of pink. They also wore sunglasses and sandals with blue and white stripes.
The Energizer battery has appeared in more than a hundred commercials, the earlier ones featuring a fake rival battery which was obviously depicting Duracell. In many of the later commercials they included well-known villainous characters that would try and capture and destroy the Energizer bunny. Some of my favorites include Darth Vader from Star Wars, Dracula, Boris and Natasha and even the Wicked Witch of the West.
Both the Duracell and Energizer bunnies are so well-known and keep on being introduced to new generations of TV viewers. Such is the impact of advertising and commercials.

Elephant $7.61 Jokingly referred to as the White Stripes’ British album, Elephant is scattered with cultural references that give away the fact it was recorded far from home.
