Vintage Grosgrain

Cleaning mold off a vintage hat?
I just inherited a turn of the century (if not older) top hat. It’s made from (I think) grosgrain, non-collapsible. It already has a tear in its crest, and I’m concerned about doing further damage to it. It has a definite mold smell, and a couple of white dots, but no visible mold. I’ve lightly wiped it off and placed it on my balcony to try and get a little sun, but I’m north faced, so it won’t get too much.
I’ve read advice saying to use Lysol, Windex & the freezer, various restoration chemicals, but I’m honestly thinking I should phone a museum at this point. Anyone have any experience dealing with something like this?
I would call a museum. Ask for the restoration department.
