Valentine’s Day Ideas That Go Beyond Romance

The automatic assumption in many people’s minds when they contemplate Valentine’s Day ideas is that they are planning for an evening of romance. Much care and thought goes into cooking that special dinner, creating the atmosphere with candles and floral arrangements, and dreaming up the one perfect gift that will express everything they feel. For example, you might have a scavenger hunt throughout the house. You could play a “matchmaker” game with older kids, where teams hear the first name in a famous couple and try to guess the second name. There are books and websites with all sorts of party ideas to adapt to a Valentine’s Day theme.

But some of the best Valentine’s Day ideas that go beyond the standard conception of romance involve things you can do for others, including those who are alone themselves, with no special partner, or people who are in unfortunate situations. For example, you could make up a basket with the fixings for a nice Valentines dinner and send it anonymously to a couple who have had a really hard time recently. Or you and your family could visit a hospital or a nursing home, taking presents to people to surprise them and brighten their day.

Nor should you lack for Valentine’s Day ideas even if you are alone yourself. You can take baskets of treats to those who are shut-in, or take the day as an opportunity to thank people who have done you a kindness in the past few months. Send flowers anonymously. And give yourself a good dinner or treat yourself to a luxurious, relaxing, decadent trip to a spa.
