Teddy Bear

Teddy Bear
How do I become one of the world’s foremost antique teddy bear experts?

I love collecting teddy bears and have some limited editions including one antique bear. I’m interested in becoming an antique teddy bear expert who would be asked for advice by other antique experts who don’t specialize in antique bears and be paid for my expertise.

I don’t have any training in antiques so how would I go about learning what I need to know and then become an expert?

I think this is a great question. Years ago I started collecting Dolls and their toys. As I learned about them then I became interested in the history and the country of origin and why they were made of what they were made of, which was supply and demand. I have dolls back to 1820′s, which is very interesting.

But what I did is buy books on the subject and more books and now I have a library full of books of reference. I love answering the toy questions because it keeps me on my toes. I also price the toys at estate sales and some shows and for families and I also sell on Ruby Lane and Ebay,

So my advise to you is Bears are most loved in Germany, England and Canada. I would starting buying reference on the different manufactures and learn the small differences between the makers.
There are books even on today’s bears artists. When I sell bears usually the books come in from the estate as well and those all go in my store on ebay.

You can buy books used from http://used.addall.com great place
I like the Steiff-Teddy Bears love for a lifetime by Vertag and Marianne Cieslik, but that just deals with one factory. I have quite a few books on Bears, but I am not as sharp on them. A lady asked about a standing black dog in hobbies on yahoo, I could not find the exact dog but found a factory where they made standing animals. Go to Bear shows and take some magazines. Test your skills on the ebay pictures, the antiques and correct ids will be on RubyLand.com.

Hope this helps and have a great time collecting knowledge!!!
