Styrofoam Discs

Styrofoam Discs
Was this a super conductor?

When I was about 10 years old my grandfather came over and poured some liquid nitrogen into a Styrofoam cup. Then he took a small disk of metal approximately a centimeter in diameter and floated it in the air above the liquid nitrogen. I believe he said it was a super conductor… but even so to this day I can’t figure out how this worked.

There was nothing to repel the super conductor away from the cup, and there was no electricity involved.

If it was a super conductor how did it repel itself away from the cold?

This would have been around 1986.

A superconductor will float on a magnetic field. Could there have been a magnet too?
