What’s the difference between a starfish and a sea star?

I’ve heard people make the distinction very insistently, but I don’t know the difference.

Hi, Moonlit. Those two terms are synonyms. However, some people are very insistent that “sea star” be the standard term, and the “starfish” be dropped from usage, at least in the scientific literature. The reason is that these creatures are not fish. A similar issues occurs about “ladybugs.” They are beetles (Coleoptera), not true bugs (Hemiptera), so there is a movement to call them “ladybird beetles” or “ladybeetles” instead. No great big deal in my view, but that’s the deal.
