Fishing line problem?

When putting new 12lb line on my fishing rod, I’ve experienced some problems. I tried restringing it 3 times, each time the line gets tangled and messed up. By that, I mean when I cast the line gets all screwed up and a bunch comes out, and I have to cut alot off. When I string the rod, I put the spool black side up on the ground, tie the end to my rod, and reel in the line while holding it to make sure it doesn’t go on wrong. I don’t notice anything going wrong, but each time the same thing happens. Please help?
