Small Pieces

Can a clothes dryer catch on fire or smoke from small pieces of paper?
My roommates dryer seems to smoke once in a while, she thinks that it is because I sometimes leave wrappers and little slips of paper in my pocket. The machine is also run 4-5 times an evening. Would it be possible that small slips of paper could cause this?
It could be because your dryer vent needs replaced/cleaned. Also mine did the same thing once when the heat sensor went bad. Clean out the vent (long, typically silver-colored hose) it gets backed up especially with cold/wet weather.
