Does a silver leaf male tree shed its’bark?

My sister in law has a silver leaf maple tree that is about 20 years old. This fall it has started shedding its’ outer layer of bark. Here in OK we have had a very hot droughty summere. Could this be the cause of this shed? Thanks

Yes, as the newer bark pushes out the older bark. I wouldn’t worry too much as long as the newer bark looks healthy and strong. If you start to see rot, then you have a major problem.
