Shell Laminate
Fallkniven s1 Sharpener and info questions!!? is it a good knife? opinions wanted!?
So i deicided to shell out $155 + $7 in shipping to get the “wonderfull Fallkniven laminated s1 knife” Should be here in in 3 days, What sharpener (s) will i need? perfuribly combined. i dont like being dependent on lubes for knives even though this is my first knife if its possible to avoid oils and just use water can somone let me know.
Also, can i use a fire rod, (Magnesium bar or ferrocerium rods on parts of this knife or will it damage parts of the knife? i would likley be using the rods and bars for creating fires on the dull part towards the end of the knife where it comes in.
Also what do you guys think of this knife?
Fallkniven makes an excellent knife, with many proponents. The VG10 steel is excellent, and generally, if properly heat treated, will outperform even ATS34 steels falling somewhere between ATS34 and S30v. The edge is quite hard – RC60.
Personally, for a sharpener, in a small form factor I happen to like and use the Spyderco Pocket Stone Double Stuff:

It’s actually ceramic, so works well even on hard steels. These work fine with water, though oil is better.
For a bench sharpener, I have an Edge Pro system:

with the polishing tape so I can get to polished edges – these tapes are something like using a buffing wheel. Again, water is fine, oil is better.
Regarding the fire rod – no and yes, the steels is hard enough that you shouldn’t be able to mark the steel with the fire rod. However, if in your use of it, you apply enough lateral force on the edge itself, you can bend or chip out the edge. Generally when I use this style of fire starter I use it on the spine of the knife rather than the edge.
