What is beading with lace trim?

I’m making a dress.. I haven’t sewn in quite sometime I need a little refresh on some things… First off it asks for beading with lace trim… Can someone explain that please? Also can someone explain to me what boning is? Thanks

“beading with lace trim” is one of those sewing things that sound like it means one thing, but it means something else. It has nothing to do with small round glass objects with holes, it is a type of embroidered trim with holes in it used as a decorative trim. Ribbon is often threaded through the holes. The holes are larger than the holes found on “entredeaux” which are very small and very square. Beading holes are usually oval or oblong or rectangular.

If you can only find the two separate they are easy to sew together. Place the beading and the eyelet together on the wrong sides. sew a straight fine sea, Trim seam down to on eighth of an inch. Use a very narrow zig zag and sew over this narrow allowance, allow the needle to go over the edge so it is encased in the stitching. This is called “rolling and whipping” and it is a Fine Heirloom Sewing technique. You can look up heirloom sewing through google, there are many sites devoted to it. Some instructors have you sew the rolled part down on the right side, place the piece in the sewing machine and sew another very narrow zigzag on the stitching to hold it in place. it is sometimes called “scotch tape stitch” because it hold the seam in place. Now you have beading with lace trim.

If you want you can sew together beading and a lace edging. To connect these two you will need cotton thread, and use a fine zig zag stitch. Butt the two edges together and zigzag so each edge is caught, one swing sews the beading, the other sews the edging. This is also a Fien Heirloom Sewing technique.

Boning is used to give shape and structure to a dress. it stiffens the seams, helps to hug the body tightly and it is what keeps strapless dresses from falling down and embarrassing the wearer. There are several types of boning, from spiral springs made of steel to light weight plastic strips. Some boning comes in a casing, meaning a fabric tube that can be sewn directly onto the seam allowance. Some requires you sew a casing into the dress and insert the boning directly into the seam allowance, which is then sew down to the dress, similar to a flat felled seam. I hope this wasn’t too long or confusing. The pattern instruction sheet should have illustrations of what they mean. Additionally, you can contacts some pattern companies for clarification or you can ask at pattern review.com where someone might have already sewn what you are starting and might have a couple tips to share.
