Errors With A Fargo Printer

Fargo printer systems provide custom printed PVC cards.  These cards are used for photo identification, business cards and other uses for businesses and organizations.  The systems are easy to use, although occasionally a printer error does occur.  With just a bit of assistance from the card operator, these printers can be up and running again in a matter of minutes.  By following the suggestions of the printer manufacturer, printer issues such as ribbon and card feeding issues can be easily fixed.  Some trouble shooting tips can be found below.

Unable to Feed Card Message

When observing the LCD or LED screen, you may find a message that the printer is unable to detect the cards that have been placed into the input hopper.  This message may also indicate that there are no cards in the hopper or that the cards loaded are loaded incorrectly.

When this takes place, make sure that there are cards in the input hopper of the printer.  The cards possibly may be stuck together so they cannot be individually pulled into the printing area. If they appear stuck together, carefully fan the cards without touching the surface of any card.  Straighten the cards back into the stack and return them to the card hopper.  If the printer cover or hopper cover are opened, close them.  Continue printing by pressing the resume button.

If the printer still will not take the next card in, cancel the print job by pressing the cancel print button.  Turn the power off and wait a short time before turning the printer back on.  This should have cleared the original print job so you can begin the print job over again.

Ribbon Sensor Error Message

When the printer is not able to locate the next panel in the print ribbon, a ribbon sensor error occurs.  There are many things that cause this error.  Some of these are a print ribbon that will not advance a broken print ribbon or a damaged ribbon.

When this message occurs, open the printer and remove the ribbon.  Examine the ribbon for tears, breaks and wrinkles.  If you find a tear or break, connect the two end of the ribbon with a piece of scotch tape.  Advance the ribbon past the taped section and place it back into the printer.  If the ribbon is wrinkled, straighten out the wrinkle and try to advance the ribbon past that section.  This will provide the printer with the next set of panels for card printing.  After placing the ribbon into the printer, resume the printing by pressing the resume button.

Card Jam Error

Sometimes a PVC card will jam inside of the card printer.  When this occurs, open the printer cover and remove the print ribbon.  There are buttons such as cancel, pause, forward or backward on the printer.  Press these buttons to move the rollers back and forth allowing the jammed card to be freed from how it had been stuck.  Remove the card, return the printer ribbon and then close the cover of the printer. A new card from the hopper should be able to be printed with the next card printing command.

Any ID card printer will have a few issues.  This is true about a Datacard printer, Evolis printer or Zebra printer.  With just a bit of knowledge, you can keep your printers running with ease.
