Tips For Staying Healthy And Safe On The Job
The following tips will help office workers stay healthy and avoid accidents on the job.
1. Wash your hands frequently. You have heard it before and you will probably hear it again. Washing your hands can help you avoid contagious illnesses like the flu and the common cold. Wash your hands frequently or use a hand sanitizer if washing with soap and water is not possible.
2. Don’t sit at your desk for too long. It is a good idea to take routine breaks, even if they are short. Get up and walk around and stretch your muscles. Take deep relaxing breaths and work to reduce the tension in your back neck and shoulders that comes with sitting at a desk all day. You should also use the time to look away from your monitor and rest your eyes.
3. Reduce snacks. Sitting at a desk all day long can elevate your risk of gaining weight. If you get hungry, bring snacks from home such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain snacks, and low-fat yogurt. Avoid the vending machines and drink water instead of sugared and caffeinated soft drinks.
4. Make sure your surroundings are safe. Cover the corners of desks and filing cabinets with a soft material to prevent bumping into them and bruising. Use safety mats on slippery surfaces, make sure your office furniture is properly assembled and that bolts are tightly fastened.
5. Learn how to safely operate any office machinery. When using machines such as shredders and laminators, make sure that clothing, necklaces, ties, and ribbon lanyards do not get caught in the mechanical workings of the device.
6. Try not to stress out. Whenever possible remove yourself from stressful situations and do not let yourself get caught up in office dramas and problems that are not related to your job. Unnecessary stress is the leading cause of a number of illness and medical complications.
7. Clean your office equipment with disinfectant regularly. Your keyboard, phone, and writing utensils can easily help you spread germs around the office. Wipe them down at the end of every day if possible.
8. Lift heavy objects with care. Improper lifting can lead to back strain and back injuries. Lift with your legs, and if you feel that a job is too difficult for you to handle on your own, ask someone else to help you move the heavy object.
9. Stay at home if you are sick. Many employees unwittingly spread germs around the office because they come in when they are sick. The office will function without you for a day or two. Make sure you avoid the office, particularly if you have a fever.
10. Make sure your electrical equipment is properly installed, and never attempt to open or fix electronic equipment without proper training. Working on electrical equipment can lead to electrical shock. Make sure outlets are not overloaded and make sure rugs and mats do not cover cords.
