The Dangers Of Dog Collars

Caution with Dog Collars
Dog collars were made for safety purposes. They help prevent the dog from getting lost and running too far, plus these are tools that are widely used for training and domestication. These canine collars are quite beneficial, but their effectiveness greatly depends on how the dog’s owner uses them.  Simple as they are, collars could be fatal to your dog if you don’t know how to use them. There are two popular hazards that may arise if you’re not careful with using collars:

Strangulation Hazard
This is a common hazard which involves your dog getting strangled by its own collar. This especially happens when dog collars become stuck at an object and your pet would try to pull away to free itself. Another reason is when the collar gets too tight. Choke slip collars and metal prong collars are some of the collars responsible for this, since they have the feature of closing into the dog’s neck when given a simple tug.  Recommended collars to avoid this kind of hazard are the breakaway collar, martingale collars, quick-release buckles and the like.

Choking Hazard
This hazard takes place when the dog swallows or bites something and suffocates from doing so.  These commonly happen with dogs wearing jeweled restraints and other dog collars that have designs that might not be attached securely.  This goes to show that collars shouldn’t be just limited to being a medium for fashion.  Instead, it should also be considered for safety purposes. Size Right Harness and other stores have now begun to manufacture collars that have safety locks to keep a restraint tight with the neck, while still preventing choking.
While these hazards are informing you about the proper use of collars, the same dangers can also be said about dog muzzles. Given these two hazards, you, as a dog owner, should be careful.  Once purchasing a new dog collar, learn how to use it properly and never leave it on your dog unattended.  Be responsible.
