strange surveyor stake…what to do?

The house next door is for sale–and the other day some surveyors showed up to mark the property-(must’ve gotten an offer) so I was walking around my property yesterday and noticed a strange stake—the property line is clearly marked-my neighbor put up reflective stakes and the backyard has one of the original metal stakes in the ground still–the surveyors marked it with bright pink ribbon—-but 3 feet over and maybe 5 yards in on my property they dug a small hole and drove in a stake flush with the bottom of the hole–and marked it with a piece of blue ribbon tied to a piece of grass???? what would that be about? why are they marking stuff on my property? what do you think I should do about that stake in the hole? the lawn mower already removed the blue ribbon! thanks for any info!

The standard color code used by almost all utility companies and surveyors for painting & flags is:

White – “Here is the area I plan on excavating!”

Blue – water line

Red -electricity

Yellow -natural gas

Green -sewer

Orange -telephone and/or fiber optic line

This may or may not be the case for your neighbors surveyors. It could be a benchmark. Call the realestate agent and have them put you in touch with the surveyors to solve the mystery. It could very well mean that thier water line is on your property.
