Quilling Paper

What kind of paper is used in quilling?
I have an idea of a quilling pattern, however I have never done quilling in my life. Before I take it to the next level I would like to test it first without having to buy quilling paper (I have no arts and crafts store near by and I am too anxious to start working on it). For that matter I would like to know what kind of paper is used in quilling, is it normal paper, like the paper one uses in the printer or is it a little bit thicker, like construction paper.
I know one can work with different widths of paper but I do not know how thick the quilling paper it is usually. Also what is the standard length of a quilling paper strip in a pack?
Different and varying widths and lengths — anywhere from 1/16″ to 3/8″ in width and 12″ to 24″ in length.
If you are just practicing and trying to get a feel for it before investing in tools and special papers, normal paper would be fine to experiment with. Choose a pattern and go for it!
