MOT Failure – think I’ve been had?

My car has just had its MOT and failed on a snapped rear suspension coil and front drive links worn to excess.

was this via the main dealer or a local mot testing centre?
if it was the main dealer, they will use genuine renault parts and usually the cost alone of parts is higher than a GOOD non-genuine alternative. Also the labour rates will be higher.
I know it is a bit late to offer this advice, but ALWAYS get at least 3 prices first – phone around, and be sure to take all the details of the estimate as the final figure is not all that you should take into consideration – balance cost of parts, labour and any extras. Then if need be mix and match the good bits and go back to the source you feel the most comfortable with and discuss it again and options you may have, for example if the labour was good at one place, but the parts more expensive, tell them you can get the parts cheaper and ask them to source them from a different supplier or even suggest you supply them yourself.
You mentioned your friends car and the charges they incurred – unless it was the exact same vehicle and model it is irrelevant as all car parts costs vary as does the labour to replace as the method and ease of replacement will vary from vehicle to vehicle.
Another point to mention – it is good practice to replace coil springs in pairs as the tension from the new to the other exisiting one will be different and may cause the vehicle to handle / react differently. A good garage will always recommend the replacement of a pair – whether you act upon it or not is up to you (and your wallet of course!) Out of interest, did the garage recommend 2?
If you really think you have been “had” go to 2 other garages and get prices for the exact same work (in writing) then return to the garage that carried out the work, ask to see the Service Manager and put your concerns to him and ask for his reaction.
