My 1995 BMW 525i needs new engine block – how much is it worth?

I need to sell my 1995 BMW 525i, and don’t know where to find its value. The engine block blew out last week and my mechanic who I trust quoted me $2K to repair, but suggested a better/safer option is a new/rebuilt engine for $3K. KBB (if it had working engine) is $5500. It’s a premium package car , no other problems before this, here are the specs:

I don’t think it makes sense to throw $2K into a car that may be worth only $3K. You didn’t list the mileage, so I’m assuming it’s pretty high, since the engine went out. Your car is 13-14 years old. I don’t think you should put money into repairing it, just so you can sell it.

An idea is to part it out. You can sell parts on e-bay or Craigs list. Get rid of most of the parts, then call the junk yard and let them take the rest. You’ll probably be able to get about $1,000-1,500 for the parts.

Good luck!
