Pink roses are one of the longest existing roses we know of. They have a rich history, even being depicted in some of the earliest pieces of art.

Today, most people associate roses with the colour red. However, when roses were first cultivated, they were only found in various shades of pink. Pink was also the most common colour among wild roses. Over time, the discovery of new species and modern techniques have introduced many more colours – but pink was definitely the original!

As all of these roses evolved, so did their meanings – and the meaning of the pink rose became more defined too. Roses in general symbolise love, but because pink was the most prevalent, it became more closely associated with those sentiments.

Over the years, however, the meaning of pink roses has altered somewhat. It is said that in Greek mythology, Rhoanthe was turned into a pink rose by the God Apollo after unfairly attaining the right to be the protector of women. This led to negative associations of pain, extreme suffering and even death. Today, pink roses signify new romance that has yet to bloom – but the most traditional connotation is a mother’s love for her child. This comes from the story that as Mary saw her son Jesus carrying the cross to his death, she shed a tear on barren ground and from that tear grew the first and most perfect pink rose.

Dark pink roses signify gratitude and appreciation, while light pink roses are associated with gentleness and admiration, and can also be used to express wishes of sympathy. Not only do they have the perfect meaning for letting someone know they are loved and appreciated, they are also a really lovely flower in themselves and are a bit more imaginative than the normal red variety. Red roses symbolises passion, so if want something a bit spicy, then perhaps red is the way to go – but pink roses have a deeper, more thoughtful message.

While much has changed over the years, pink roses have maintained their prominence in the flower world. All you need to know is that the lucky recipient of a bunch of pink roses is sure to feel very special.
