If you’re new to the world of quilling, you may rely on free quilling patterns for your inspiration. It’s important to realize that you can shape your own quilling pattern from literally any design that takes your fancy! You can take inspiration from several free quilling patterns or even mix & match different patterns to create your own, unique masterpiece!
Tips For Free Quilling Patterns
I know you are anxious to jump in headfirst and start designing your own masterpieces, but its important to begin by using some free quilling patterns that you can pick up in books, catalogues and online, so that you are able to experience the full range of designs that are possible. It’s only after you have perfected this that you may start considering mixing different patterns together to create your own piece. Its often the case, you’ll find, that mixing different designs together is a trial & error process as some designs go well together and others don’t. A good tip is to look for similarities in designs and use this to try blending those 2 designs together.
Here are other tips you should consider:
* If you desire shorter strips of paper, avoid using scissors or a razor as this will leave a very sharp look to the finished article. Instead tear the strips gently so that it blends in and looks more natural.
* You may find that some of the pieces you’ve cut out don’t meet your approval! This is why it is best to make sure you have some extra pieces – just in case! You can then compare & pick the best ones!
* This may seem a bit obvious, but if you need a longer strip of paper than you have, simply cut 2 short pieces and then glue them together!
Don’t worry about the fragile nature of quilling end products! If they were well-made, then you can practically step on them and they will still remain intact!
As an experienced quiller, I have often found great beauty in even my less successful quilling pieces! Don’t be so hasty to throw out a piece, just because it doesn’t resemble the piece you had anticipated. Leave it a while and reflect.
Having said that, quilling isn’t something that you should rush and make hastily. It’s something that should take its time to construct. If you are a true quiller or wish to enter the world of quilling, you’ll find that it requires great patience and attention to detail.
You’ll notice that many of the quilling patterns you see resemble flowers. Although the majority of patterns are floral based, it is not limited to this type of design. Free quilling patterns can be found that resemble insects, geometric shapes even people! Make sure that you consult as many free quilling patterns as possible to full appreciate the broad spectrum of patterns.
Many quillers have commented that their finished product is an extension of themselves and what emotion they are experiencing. Without a doubt somewhere down the line you’ll end up with a finished quilling design which doesn’t resemble what you had anticipated. In this instance, you should reflect upon your creation and find out what this says about yourself before you decide to throw it out in the garbage! Remember, even the greatest artists in the world never imagined their finished masterpieces would look like the way they did!
