The Garmin Forerunner 305 is the sixth model of a small series of heart rate monitor GPS watches. Like the 205, the Forerunner 305 has a GPS receiver embedded in the wrist portion of the unit with an built in wrap-around antenna in the wrist band. These features make it easier to keep up an accurate flow of information to your Garmin Forerunner 305, even when jogging under trees or tall buildings which may otherwise scatter the signal. And because the GPS is built-in to the Garmin 305 Heart Rate Monitor, you don’t have to concern yourself about the aggravation of wearing a separate piece while exercising. The Forerunner 305 offers a plus over the lower priced 205, as it comes with a good heart rate monitor, that adds to the distance, pace, and elevation data that you record during your workout. This information can then be uploaded onto your computer for a observable progress representation.

There are quite a few advantages to be gained from using the Garmin 305 Forerunner during your workout regime. The Garmin Training Center, software that is included with the unit, allows you to overlay the training routes your unit has recorded onto a satellite generated map; the graphs will present your elevation changes and speed at various intervals. It also has a Virtual Opponent, which gives you the advanced option of racing against yourself, as it evaluates current data with that from a previous workout on the same route. The display on the wrist unit of the Forerunner 305 will graphically compare your results with the earlier workout so that you are always encouraged to improve your performance.

There are several accessories that match up well with the Forerunner 305, including the heart rate monitor, that is wireless and is included with the unit, and options, such as a cadence sensor for bicycling and a foot pad for running. The foot pad is perfect for people who sometimes choose to exercise indoors, but would still like to track their progress. You can use the cadence sensor when you’re riding your bicycle to track your progress without the desire for GPS; there’s even a feature to let you know if you’re cycling too quickly or too slowly for your predetermined rates, warning you so you can maintain.

The Forerunner 305 enhances on the 205 model with the addition of heart rate alerts you can set for yourself. By programming heart rate targets for different sections of your workouts, you can take full advantage of your cardiovascular training. When you are outside these ranges (over or under), the Forerunner 305 will alert you.

It’s easy to charge the Forerunner once you relax from your workout with the easy and functional dock, where you can also upload your information to your computer to evaluate progress.
