Safety Vests Imply To America Fluorescent Colors Are Preferred For Safety

The sight of bright yellow and orange neon colored safety vest is seen on workers throughout hundreds of cities and on highways across the US. Most people know what they mean as the neon vests appear around construction sites, accidents on the road and in parking buildings. The visibility gets brighter as the sun’s rays reflect their florescent colors.

Vests and safety t-shirt are worn by hunters to provide visibility to other hunters in the woods. Many lives have been protected by these sleeveless waistcoats. The ultimate question regards the ability of animals being hunted to detect the blaze orange color. Currently, many states require the orange protective wear. Researchers performed studies on deer and discovered their eyes are not designed to respond to the bright fluorescent orange hunting gear. The more important concern for hunters is movement and smell that gives away their presence.

A sports enthusiast who walks, runs or hikes is obliged to wear the protective sleeveless waistcoat. Safety risks are substantially lowered by the increased visibility of people who enjoy the sports along or across highways. The retro-reflective gear better ensures safety for runners in marathons and cyclists on rides along the open highways.

In 2008, a Federal regulatory act required media personnel, who are on rights-of-way belonging to the federal government, to wear the protective and bright colored vests. Many states have also followed suit and require the brightly colored clothing article for media and workers on their state roads as well. The regulation is late in coming to the media workers but it must have been successful enough to prompt their inclusion.

A search for statistics to prove the success of these protective waistcoats with retro-reflective colors is found in one area that values the safety gear for employees. A successful difference has been documented for Police Officers who wear blue bulletproof safety vests with light blue retro-reflectors. The number of Police Officers killed by firearms greatly decreased in 2009. The count of 3000 officer’s represents the number of our men in blue who were saved by wearing the protective vest.

The hot orange neon vests can be seen all over cities and on highways. Wherever there are city workers, traffic directors, construction crews, medical and paramedic services the fashion statement for safety is made. The bikers, walkers and traffic guards are safer and even some therapy dogs have been sporting the bright orange as they walk with owners through town.

The safety gear is sold to be worn based on the level of protection needed. Class one is a color that is approved for low visibility that workers wear when slow traffic is passing. Class two is a color with intermediate level visibility when traffic travels at a minimum speed of 25 mph. The color for highest visibility is worn by employees exposed to traffic going 50 mph or greater. The visibility is determined by the strength or brightness if the color.

In conclusion, high visibility vests and orange t-shirts are popular in work and recreation places all over cities in the US and other countries. The idea was a great one that came from a nonprofit organization, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) that sets standards for the US and influences the world. Legislation did not have to pass laws to require their use till 2008. Until then, they were widely worn by most industry workers which adopted the ANSI standards.
