Homemade Gauss Rifle Does Not Work Well?
Okay, I have seen this asked before but not with an answer.
I have 11 1/2 in. Neodymium Cube Magnets with a “supposed” pulling force of 27 lbs each.
I also have 30 Steel Balls that i had lying around from a magnetix thing from a long time ago.
I arranged the magnets and balls like this B = Ball M = Magnet
B MBB MBB MBB MBB MBB MBB
And so forth, they end up like this
BMB BMB BMB BMB
But however instead of having the final ball shoot at a high speed, it just shoots about 1 ft then instantly drops. Ive tried it with different spacings, different amounts of magnets, It seems they ALL have the exact same force, as if 2 magnets would be the same force as 10 magnets would. Can anyone help me on this, Im doing this for a science fair.
The force does not depend on the number of magnets. A short spring is just as strong as a long spring of the same stock and compression, for example. What increases is the time and distance that the force is applied to the front as the chain increases. However, after a certain number of magnets the final speed of the front ball stops getting greater when the column is so long that the ball ejects before the two rear most balls have even separated. That mean they do not contribute to the front ball’s speed and more balls have no further effect.
