Broken ribbon cable on iPod Nano 4th Gen?

I broken a ribbon cable on an iPod Nano 4th Gen and I would like to know what it goes it. It goes to this metal piece attached to the logic board that the battery is glued to, on the bottom are two copper like points. What is this piece and is it important? Can the iPod function without it or is it toast?
