Loose Feathers

I have a chook who is sneezing and has dark dirty feathers around her vent from Loose poo? Any ideas?

Make sure you clean up her vent area to prevent blockages or secondary health issues from the feces caking on her.

Not sure what’s causing her symptoms, but you can figure out treatment by looking at your husbandry practices.

Has she been wormed regularly? Certain internal parasites can cause runny stool. Others (such as gapeworms) can cause head shaking and sneezing or coughing. If you haven’t wormed you flock regularly, you may need to start with this treatment.

Is she showing any other signs of a respiratory illness? Watery eyes, discharge from the nostrils or swelling around the head can all indicate an infection that would need treatment with antibiotics.

Do you use a coccidiosis treatment or preventative on your flock? Coccidia bacteria can also cause runny stool and overall health issues. Young chicks without a developed immune system and older birds are more succeptible to this than an average, healthy adult.

I recommend to every poultry owner to treat bi-yearly for both worms and internal parasites and coccidiosis.

If your birds are already treated for parasites and coccidiosis, you may need to start her on an antibiotic cycle. You can try a 3-day cycle of terrimyacin or auromyacin (both broad-spectrum antibiotics) and watch for improvement. If she’s not getting better, you may need to switch to something stronger, such as Bactrim.

I also recommend putting powdered vitamins in her water and setting her up in a sick pen and separating her from the rest of the flock. If it is contagious, this can help prevent the spread of the disease. And even if it isn’t, a sick or injured bird can be picked on by the others.
