If there is one place many of us dread to go, it is the dentist’s chair. The sight of a large syringe being injected into tender gums can bring tears to the eyes of even the most red-blooded person. The concept of minimally invasive dentistry is removal of caries with methods that minimize the loss of sound enamel and dentin.

SmartPrep Instruments is a self-limiting technology for conservative cavity preparation that preserves healthy tooth structure. Made up of innovative polymer material, SmartPrep represents a major innovation in conservative and pediatric dentistry.

These instruments are designed to only allow for the removal of infected dentin as they are self-limiting and cannot cut, or prepare, healthy dentin. It loses its efficacy and functional ability and becomes more rounded when it comes into contact with this harder healthy dentin as the preparation is finalized. It is not designed to cut or remove enamel, composite, amalgam, cementum, or healthy dentin. The instrument dulls quickly when it comes in contact with these harder substances. As a result, it is designed to protect against unnecessary pulp exposure. SmartPrep Instruments are designed to reduce post-operative sensitivity and minimize the risk of inadvertent pulp exposure, which could lead to endodontic treatment.

Conventional methods of decay removal with high or low speed carbides most often require the injection of local anesthesia to numb the pain. SmartPrep instrument reduces the need for anesthesia.  As educated clinicians, we are the intelligence on the one end of the hand piece, now with SmartPrep, we have an intelligent instrument on the other end of the hand piece to conservatively perform our task.

The polymer bur is a practical application of the principles of relative hardness properties commonly used by the clinician in determining what dentinal structure needs to be removed.  Using materials harder than carious dentin but softer than non-altered dentin, is a new conservative approach in developing new methods in dentin caries excavation.  Management of pediatric patients is better with smartprep because of reduced need for giving local analgesic injection, decreased sensitivity, less chances of pulp exposures along with the preservation of maximum amount of tooth structure.
