How do I mine gold and red ore on minecraft beta?

I play minecraft beta, and I found some gold and red ore. I tried to mine it with my stone pickaxe, but the rock just falls apart and doesn’t give me anything. Do I need a different kind of pickaxe? If so, how do I make it.

a lot of the rarer things require iron pickaxes, stone picks will just destroy the thing your thing to get.

iron is in stone that has orangeish/yellowish nuggets in it, thats called iron ore, you have to use a furnace to turn iron ore into iron bars, simply use a crafting table to make a ring of cobblestone, place the furnace, right click on it. there are three boxes the top box is what you’re heating, the bottom is the fuel you are using and the right box is the items that are finished, you can use wood planks coal or charcoal(obtained by putting regular wood in the furnace)

once you have the iron bars just make a pick using three bars as the pick and stick as the handle(like usual)
