HOW CAN I MAKE THIS BED CANOPY?

Hi!

I don’t know if you have any sewing skills, and/or a sewing machine, so we will try to do this without any sewing! If you do sew, this will be a fairly easy project!

Let’s assume you have a twin-size bed. You will need two “flat” twin-size sheets in the color/pattern you want. You will also need sharp scissors, and either an iron and some heat-sensitive mending tape, or some of the sticky hem tape that is meant to permanently bond fabric. (This is to keep the cut edges from raveling and looking bad). You will need a LOT of the tape if you do not sew – enough to go up and down the length of a twin-size sheet eight times! You will also wants some matching ribbon, to hang the canopy over the bed. Finally, you will need some safety pins.

Let’s get started! The first sheet will be our canopy – the big piece of material in the middle. The second sheet we cut into four equal “strips” lengthwise. When you are done cutting the strips, you will have four very long skinny strips. Those are the corner pieces that hang to the floor!

Next, we need to sew, use the hem tape, or mending tape to turn under our cut edges, and keep them neat and tidy. Once all of your cut edges are done, we will sew, or use more of the mending/hem tape to attach the long pieces to the corners of the canopy piece. Fold each long piece in half, and at the center is where the corner of the canopy piece will go. You will attach the corner of the canopy piece to the center of the long piece (or side curtain) and then attach each side, working from the center out. This way, all four side curtains are the same.

Once all four side curtains are attached, you can use matching ribbon and hand-sew or even safety pin the ribbons to the four corners of the canopy. You will want to hand your cup hooks for the canopy just over the corners of the bed. By making a loop of ribbon off of each corner, you can easily hang the canopy from cup hooks screwed in to the ceiling. Experiment first with one corner, and adjust to get the proper amount of “drape” that you want, then cut the remaining corner loops the same length.
