Where do they get hair feathers?

I’ve heard rumors going around that hair feathers are plucked from dead chickens and then dyed and put in peoples hair! EW! I was totally turned off at first, but because this trend is getting hotter, I want to know the truth. Is that really what they do? And if not, how do they get them? Thank you for anyone who takes the time to answer.
