Should We Stop Our Children From Watching Fairytales Where There Is A Character Of Evil Witch?
Should we stop our children from watching fairytales where there is a character of evil witch? For example the Snow white or the Beauty and the Beast.
My eldest daughter is 5 years old. Recently she is becoming very attached to the glamorous princess characters such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White etc. These fairy tales are her bedtime cuddles. She was having a stay over from one of her friends where her friend’s parents also came. After a while my daughter wanted to see Snow White Disney cartoon which I allowed her to borrow from the local library. Her friends parents protested instantly. Their view is- it is a ‘scary story’ and we ought not to allow our children to watch these sort of movie.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
To avoid any further argument, I played the Mickey Mouse cartoon instead.
Is Fairy tales bad for our children? Is it teaching the evilness of the villain characters of the stories rather than the fairness, love, sacrifice, braveries? How so? I am talking about the MPAA (the Motion Picture Association of America’s film rating system) G rated movies which are categorically suitable for all audience.
Movies like the Snow White, there is a character of the evil witch who looks very scary indeed. Her conniving way of plotting to kill the little princess, creating the poison apple etc makes even the adult to bite their nails. But I think these kind of movie are quite alright for a five year old to see. This is scary but not violent. Does these scene fan the fantasy of the child to imagine scary things? To my opinion, every child has his/ her own fantasy world regardless he/ she listen a fairy tale or not. If a child is scared to see a movie, as a parent, I would rather talk to her to see which part of the movie is making her nervous. I will tell her what I think about the movie. I will try to show her how the bright side of the story has won over the evilness of the story and for that- there is no reason for her to be stay away from watching the movie. It is important to demolish the fare. Stopping children from watching it will only increase the fare into the child’s soft novice mind and then he/ she will always run away from anything- that is unpleasant to him/ her. There is a saying, life is not a bed of roses. There is challenge, risk, debate that we face everyday. These are not the pleasant things in life. But when we learn to deal with it, life becomes normal or even enjoyable.
Therefore, my vote will be- Fairy tales are not bad for children. Any thoughts..
