What happens at the edge of a black hole?

I got asked this at a college interview, and all I could remember was that time slowed down….

You did pretty good. The edge of a Black Hole is called the Event Horizon. Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_horizon

This is the point at which even light can’t escape. From the outside, matter seems to just stay on the event horizon even after it has fallen in.
