Fabric Collage And Embellishment

Just right for fabric collage, Colour Streams has 50 hand-dyed colours in a variety of silk threads, silk ribbon, pure wool craft felt, silk velvet, silk Habatai, silk organza and silk crinkle chiffom hand printed fabrics. This wide variety of embroidery and felting materials suitable for fabric collage give the designer both textural and colour play. Adding to this is a new variety of shot shiny silk fabrics working delicate metallic lights to place into fabric collage, needle felting, or traditional felting. To get you started, Colour Streams has made a coordinated ‘Embellishment Stash Pack’, which includes fashionable fabrics and saris, and various fabric embellishments such as hand-dyed laces.

What is fabric collage? It is the collecting of treasured pieces of fabrics or unique papers, then layering and joining them together with a mixture of seaming, sewing and embroidery techniques. Choose from traditional stitching, appliqué or over laying raw seams for a contemporary look or felting. This makes a base fabric for you to beautify. Create pleasing patterns, or tell a story with your work. A type of collage with its roots deep in historycan be shown through crazy patchwork. You can make books, wall panels, purses, artist trading cards and much more.

Getting ready for your collage – Fabrics can be prepared for collage by ripping or cutting strips, fraying or burning edges and holes, scrunching or pleating fabrics for an added texture. Sometimes lace fragments from a family member are added to the collage as memorabilia. Fabrics can be painted or stamped with different shades. Some fabrics can be so shiny they frighten me, but when layered with lace and sheer on top, a beautiful light glimmers through. Embroidering & quilting with hand-dyed silk threads & ribbons is perfect for highlighting areas, making lines or borders and fastening laces, adding more dimension and texture.

Embroidery on the surface – You can finish off by including some beautiful Colour Streams craft sequins, stitching them onto your creation with seed beads. Colour Streams has flower sequins, square and diamond forms, tiny 2mm wide and 3mm wide sequins in a broad colour range. These add flickers of light to your embroidery. There are several people who collect buttons for embroidery- old and new. A number of button collectors even like to use their collection to garnish with diverse shades, sizes and textures. These interesting creations are especially appealing to the eye. There is a variety of natural and hand-dyed mother of pearl buttons available. Mix in a few beads amongst them and it is another highlight in your collage.

This kit starts with a stiffener (such as felt) and hand-dyed Habatai silk, proceeds with hand-dyed lace, crinkle silk chiffon, braids, trims and embroidery and finishes with beading. It makes a very rich textural journey, making it seam more complex than what it actually is. Colour Streams hand-dyes overdyed products, which makes colour play easy.
