What Are My Clothes Saying About Me?

Some people believe that clothes are not important, and that you should not put a lot of thought into your appearance. They argue that fashion is shallow and materialistic, and that you should not spend time or money on the way that you dress. It’s true that you don’t have to spend a ton of money buying brand name clothes, but in reality, they way you dress does send a message to the people you meet throughout your day. Whether or not it should, appearance has a lot to do with people’s first impressions of one another.

Sometimes, an outfit indicates that a person belongs to a certain subculture. Think about it. If you see someone walking down the street in a leather jacket, a black helmet, and motorcycle boots, you are going to make certain assumptions about that person’s lifestyle. You are going to assume that they ride a bike and that they identify with motorcycle culture. And if you see someone with a mohawk, a denim jacket covered in patches, and combat boots, you will assume that they identify with punk rock culture. That is the image that their outfit conveys to the rest of society.

Sometimes, people assume that someone listens to a certain type of music based on the way they are dressed. If you see a guy with a baggy white t-shirt, baggy jeans, and the latest Jordans, you might assume that he likes rap music. And if you see a woman with her jeans tucked into brown boots, a fringed denim jacket, and cowboy hat, you will probably think that she’s a fan of country music.

Some people choose to convey a message through the things that they refuse to wear. People who are vegan do not eat or wear any products that are made from animals. A vegan would refuse to wear a leather watch or any kind of fur. Some vegans would not wear wool. Instead, they would choose fabrics made only from plants or synthetic materials.

For better or for worse, our clothes tell people things about the way that we perceive ourselves. If you choose clothes that you assume send no message, such as dull neutral colors or baggy clothes that hide the shape of your body, this too sends a message. It tells people that you do not want to be noticed or dram any kind of attention. The next time you get dressed, take some time to examine your outfit, and ask a couple of key questions.

What kind of signals is this outfit sending?

Are these the things that I want people to think about me?

If the answer to the second question is no, consider changing. Obviously, you should not attempt to convey false messages with your clothes. They should be a true reflection of who you are. But most people do not truly want to blend into the background. We all have unique things we can show to the world through the way we dress. Think of your clothes as a form of art. Choose colors that you like. Choose clothes that will make you feel happy and confident when you get a glimpse of yourself in the mirror during the day. If you dress in a manner that is a reflection of who you are, people will be more likely to respond to you in the ways that you want them to.
