How do you maintain a bouquet of cut flowers?

My hubby bought me beautiful flowers yesterday, and I want to keep them looking fresh and healthy for as long as I can. Normally what I do is trim the bottoms the stems every day, and change the water in the vase everyday. Is this the right thing to do? Anything else? I don’t know what every kind of flower is in there, but some are gerbera daisies and carnations.

Cutting and water changes are good but also a 1/2 of an aspirin is suppose to keep them from going into shock, I tried this and it actually helps them live longer.
