What You Need To Know About Rowing Machines

Rowing is great way to get a good workout, and typically there are four styles of rowing machine available. The first is called piston resistance, the second magnetic resistance, the third air resistance, and the fourth water resistance. Each has its positives and negatives, and which machine you decide to buy or use will be contingent on what works best for you, and whichever you prefer. For almost every user, there’s a machine that’s a good fit.

The first kind of machine that we will discuss is the piston resistance style of machine. These usually have hydraulic cylinders on their arms, and because of the location of these arms, they are very thin machines. Since they’re smaller, they can be stored under the bed or another piece of furniture. Typically the cheapest style of rowing machine, you won’t pay a mint for one of these machines. They don’t have the most realistic rowing feel, so if you’re looking for something very realistic this is not your best choice. Even though you’ll still get great exercise on this machine, it won’t compare to the more realistic experience you’ll get on the other types.

The second type is the magnetic resistance machine. This type is similar to the piston resistance machine, but the resistance is controlled by powerful electromagnets. One advantage to these models is that because the resistance is magnetically controlled, they are almost silent. You can also change the resistance, which on many piston models is impossible. One disadvantage, however, is that they are harder to store than a piston machine. This is because they have a longer main rail that cannot be folded for storage. This machine is great for someone with enough room to store it, and someone who wants an adjustable workout.

Air Resistance machines are the type that are most commonly used by rowers when they’re not on the water. The resistance on this machine, like on the water, comes from your own pace. When you increase the speed or pace of your rowing, then the machine increases its resistance. There are usually secondary resistance levers that add or remove resistance as well. Because these machines typically have a fan, they can start to blow quite noisily. This can be seen as a disadvantage. And like the magnetic resistance machines, it has a longer main rail that means it’s harder to store. While the machine is excellent for taller users due to its long main rail, it’s not that portable. In short it’s a good machine that provides a more similar experience to rowing on the water.

Water resistance is the fourth type of rowing machine, and the last type to discuss. Because these have integrated water tanks, they’re very similar to rowing on the water. Like rowing on water – and rowing on the air resistance machine – when you increase your pace the work gets harder. And by adding or removing water to the resistance tank, you can change your resistance and have a lot of control over the workout. But even though these machines have great features, they also have some disadvantages. Since it has a long rail it is hard to store. Combine that with its water-weight, and you have something that’s very hard to move. In short if you plan on keeping this machine in one place it’s an excellent choice.
