El Siglo de Oro or Spain’s Golden Age was when most of Spain’s exceptional masters came about; they have composed some of the most brilliant paintings in the world. This painter became revered and famous in many parts of the world and could be regarded as one of the most famous if not the most famous Spanish painters of all time—Diego Velasquez. This painter is truly one of a kind in terms of form and artwork; he is a realist painter and his vision in his art is something that was not yet common during his time.

Born in a minor nobility family back in June 5, 1599 and the first chile in a brood of six, Diego Velasquez displayed mush talent as a young artist at a very early age. He showed some ability in painting and at the age of eleven, he was given an apprenticeship in the workroom of the great Francisco Pacheco who trained him and helped him hone his skills as a painter. Velasquez ended up marrying the daughter of his master and gave support for his family through concentrating on making paintings with religious themes for churches and taverns.

The career of Diego Velasquez as a master painter was made brighter by painting several masterpieces which were unparalleled during his time. Among his famous paintings is Surrender of Breda which he painted when he met Marques de Spinola; the painting signifies the victory of Spinola and it was said that Spinola was dazed and in awe when he saw the painting and cannot believe how exceptional Velasquez’ talent is to show emotion through realism in his portraits. However, Diego will continue to paint and he would make a piece that would be more popular and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most sought after piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.

Diego Velasquez is truly a national treasure, and it is without a doubt that his technique had influenced the way painters of this era will see the art of painting.
