El Siglo de Oro or Spain’s Golden Age was when most of Spain’s exceptional masters came about; they have composed some of the most magnificent paintings in the world. One particular master who made an enormous impact on painting as an art form is Diego Velasquez who is definitely one of the most popular and influential painters of Spain. He is also known for his friendship with King Phillip IV and the chief minister; he was immensely revered by the king as Velasquez showcased his style and outstanding abilities in every piece he has made.

Diego Velasquez’s family was a noble during their time; he was born on June 5, 1599 and was the first born in the family with five younger siblings. During his early years he began studying the art of painting and when he reached age eleven, Master Painter Francisco Pacheco became his mentor and his progress was very quick and by time he reached eighteen years old he was already a master painter, certified by the painters’ guild and with it he can paint as a professional. He married Pacheco’s daughter and made a living by doing a number of paintings of religious themes and tavern artworks and saved enough to buy a house for his family and another house to rent out.

Diego Velasquez made a lot of extraordinary paintings that made him popular and part of the country’s most influential personalities. He created an exceptional painting titled Surrender of Breda, picturing the victory of Marquez de Spinola, he made the piece shortly after meeting Spinola and when it was given to Spinola, he was stunned; Spinola cannot believe how brilliant Velasquez was and his ability and skill to capture and let the painting express its emotion. However, Diego will continue to paint and he would make a piece that would be more famous and more brilliant than the Surrender of Breda, he will be widely known for his piece called Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; The painting is said to be the most sought after piece in the world and until now most people visit Spain just to see this wonderful work of art.
