There are so much Spanish painters, who have left a mark in the world of art and during Spain’s El Siglo de Oro, or Golden Age, a lot of Spain’s most magnificent painters emerged. One such famous painter which the world recognizes as a master in this area of art is Diego Velasquez. He was said to be good friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister, as he was revered by his paintings, showcasing his abilities and style in every portrait he has done.

Being the first born of six children, Diego Velasquez was brough  up in a family of middle class in June 5, 1599. As early as eleven years old he started to study painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a great painter which permitted him to paint as a professional. He married Pacheco’s daughter and worked by doing some paintings of religious themes and tavern worls and saved enough to buy a house for his family and another house to rent out.

Many great paintings defined Diego Velasquez’s career as a painter; he is one of the few Spanish painters who could really be called a master in his field because of the many masterpieces he produced in his lifetime. The Surrender of Breda is an example of his internationally popular artwork which he created after he met the Marques de Spinola; it is said that when the painting was shown to Spinola, he was so amazed at how Velasquez was able to expertly paint an expression of emotions through realism which was only initiating the increase of his popularity during those times. However, The Surrender of Breda, as good as it is, will not be Velasquez’ greatest masterpiece that has been talked, discussed and put into knowledge in any era; Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour is the masterpiece that is considered as the most viewed painting in the world and because of its fame, even people who does not know much about painting knows Diego Velasquez and his Las Meninas.

These are just but an overlook of Spain’s most famous master artist, his works and life is truly an inspiration to many people; he truly is deserves to be called one of the greatest painter that ever lived.
