anxiety depression mirena coil?
Hi I hope some one out there can help me, this maybe long lol.
I have suffered with depression for approximately 3 yrs the first time resulted in hospitalization due to onset of psychotic symptoms. I have always suffered with v heavy periods and pmt for years. Basically do you think its possible that this can be related to hormones? My depression always seems to be worse when a period is due. Last year they discovered i had fibroids and cysts on ovaries and advised the mirena coil. I have had it for a year now but am still having cramps (not quite as bad as before) and my periods although lighter are lasting about 2 weeks. I have also been suffering with anxiety which I never did before the coil, and basically im at my wits end… I absolutely hate the docs and feel like a hyprocondriac.. would really appreciate any advice thanks x
The Mirena coil is a small plastic T-shaped intrauterine device that is increasingly being used to treat women with endometriosis. It contains a progesterone (progesterone-like substance) that is released into the uterus over a period of 5 years. It is sometimes also known by its generic name the levongorgestrel intrauterine system or LNG-IUS
In the longest clinical trial reported to date, the women had relatively few side effects, and most of the side effects were quite mild. Of the women who had their coil removed because of side effects, most did so because of irregular bleeding, pelvic pain or weight gain, and most did so in the first 12 months.
Irregular bleeding
Most common side effect of Mirena is irregular vaginal bleeding, which includes erratic bleeding, frequent spotting or light bleeding between periods, heavy bleeding, and longer or shorter periods. However, these problems usually settle after 3–6 months
When the coil is in place, you should not be able to feel it, and it is unlikely that your sexual partner will be aware of it during intercourse
Progestogen-related symptoms
The progestogen-related side effects include acne, decreased libido, headache, lower abdominal pain, low back pain, nausea, period pain, sweating, tender breasts, water retention and weight gain
Ovarian cysts
Women using the Mirena coil are MORE likely to develop benign ‘simple’ ovarian cysts. The most common symptom of a simple cyst is abdominal pain that does not resolve with simple painkillers. Such cysts usually disappear without treatment in 2–3 months.
As to your sysptoms especially the depression of course the symptoms are due to hormone imbalances.
