How to treat steel so it is safe to drink alcohol out of?

I took a shell from the USS Nitze’s 5″ gun and grinded it down to the size of a stein and mig welded the primer to the side as a handle. However, the mug is made of steel and I believe it is unsafe to drink out of. I was wondering if there was some kind of poly clear coat out there for this but I haven’t found anything.

steel is just iron. should be safe to drink out of, assuming its already clean
