What do you feel when you are listening to classic music?

Is it really hard to enjoy classic music?

I love classical music, as well as rock, pop, jazz, new age, electronic… I had some musical training, and so I think that gave me an appreciation for music in general. If you are having a hard time listening to it, I would suggest trying to start with the stuff you’re familiar with… probably the music that you’ve heard in music. Try google’ing for “popular classical music” or just browse your libraries catalogue for “best classical music”, etc.

Interestingly, I feel that to really enjoy classical music, it has to be heard live. The sense you get from hearing an orchestra live is much more powerful than listening on speakers… much more so than any other form of music… the experience is just that much greater. Plus, it gives you a better understanding and appreciation for the level of difficulty, when you watch the fast-moving bows of the strings, or the hands flying across a piano keyboard, or just the intensity that you see from every member of the orchestra.

You might also try listening to different eras of classical music. The romantic era (e.g. beethoven, tchaikovsky, rachmaninov) is usually the most approachable (i.e. enjoyable) to those with less understanding of the genre, although you might relate to 20th century as well (e.g. gershwin, copland.)
