Choose Colors

Choose Colors
What colors should I choose for my walls and floors?

I am buying a house that needs all new floors and paint in every room. I have no clue how to choose the right colors and make everything flow. Where do I begin and how to I choose the right colors/style? Your tips are appreciated! Thanks!

Go neutral, especially for your floors. Your best bet for flooring is hardwood. It is timeless and lasts for years and years, especially today’s wood flooring. Get finished hardwood, it has several coats of polyurethane that protects it. Carpeting is cheaper initially, but will need replaced 10 times sooner than hardwood. Once it’s dirty, it stays dirty. With hardwood, just wipe up spills, or use a microfiber mop to dust and shine. They will increase the value of your home and make it easier to resell. You can also add a nice decorator area rug for warmth and added color to your room.
As for painting, it would help to know what your furniture colors are, especially in the living/family area. In your bedrooms, choose a color from your bedding, or maybe you have a great area rug you’re using, chose a color from that. You could always start with neutral colors until you get a feel for what you’d really like, paint is the least expensive thing to change. Don’t go so safe that you paint everything white, I wouldn’t paint anything white, it’s cold and boring. Think warm colors, taupe is my favorite neutral. But don’t count out other soft colors, yellows, greens, blues, they all look great with so many colors. Bring tons of paint cards home and look at them in your lighting, the harsh florescent lighting in the stores give it a totally different look. Don’t forget to paint your ceilings as well, and not white. If you want to be very safe, when you chose your wall color, chose another color from the same paint card, just a couple shades lighter, or darker if you prefer. Darker colors make a room feel cozier. Take your time and have fun, put your own personality into it.
