Castin Craft

can polyester resin be baked?

I am thinking of creating something from polyester resin (most specifically Castin’ Craft resin) and polymer clay. But in order for the clay to cure I have to bake it, so is it also okay to bake the clay with the resin piece in it? I can’t bake the clay first then add the resin part.

Not at the temperature you’ll need to bake clay, I am afraid. However, here is a little known fact:

I own a GRP sailboat that was built in Demnark by the L&M factory. Unlike other hulls that are made of glassfiber and polyester where a catalysator has been added, my hull was built wet-on-wet without catalysator. It was then put in an oven for 48 hours at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius. That cures the polyester and gives it a strenght about 120% better than when using a catalysator.
The drawback, of course, is that few factories have oven large enough to take in a sailboat hull.
My boat is in fact a Grinde, produced by another Dane, but they hired the services of L&M to bake their hull.

Good luck with your project.
