mini-brittle stars and asterina?

I set up a 20 Gallon long mini-reef about 3 years ago and noticed some tiny star fish shortly afterward. they are about the size of a dime and either grey or striped. I’ve been told they were mini-stars but since I couldn’t find any reputable sources that said that mini-stars exist, I assumed that they were babies and that they would grow. 3 years later they haven’t gotten any bigger. Do mini-brittle stars and serpent stars exist or do they just take a really long time to grow?

The asterina stars might be hiding in the rock, or they might have died (maybe lack of food or a crab or something got them). They also might have moved into the filter. Many people will have the asterina and now even know it for many months, which indicates they are very good at hiding. What kind of hermit crab? Red hairy hermits are not reef safe and eat things like starfish, crab, snails, and anemone for example.

You have microstars (sometimes called ministars) which is a common name for a small species of Ophiuroids (brittle stars). They do not get too big at all, maybe the size of a quarter with their arms fully extended. They are great cleaner stars they hang out mostly in the live rock but they also will get into any filters and sponges and are great at removing detritus. They are much safer than bristle worms. They do not ever get any bigger, ever.
