I have ask this question in computer softwear as well….I want to print an image over sheet music. I want the music notes to show trough the image. However, I want the image to be colorful & not washed out. Like this example below. The image is printed on a book page. The text in the book page shows trough the butterfly printed on the page. I have tryed to change the opacity in photoshop, but it looks washed out. Any ideas? Thanks!

You can print on overhead projection film, there are both ink jet and laser types make sure you get the right one, any Office Stationers sell it and it’s not expensive. Ink jet ink is transparent you get a large transparency.
In PS you may be better doing it the other way around. In the blend modes you can make Black, White or Grey in a Layer transparent.
Make sure you have a high contrast music score, solid black notes and stave’s on a pure white background. You can use a Threshold Layer to exaggerate that. Place the music layer above the image layer.
With the music score layer selected go into the Blend modes, you’ll notice that they are in categories with a line between, any of the blend modes in the category that starts with Darken will make white transparent, try Multiply, any in the category that starts with Lighten will make black transparent, try Screen, and any in the category that starts with Overlay will make grey transparent, try Overlay.
