How can I make this hair style a successful hair style for prom?
The hair I plan to do for prom is somewhat similar to:

I want to half tie it up and put a white clip on the side. I plan to curl my hair. However, when I put half of my hair in a rubber band (those black ones that are real thin and hard to see), the curls tend to get messed up and kind of un-do itself a bit.
How else can I have half of my hair up without it messing the curls? I have a dark brown hair, almost black but not quite (hence, I used a black, thin rubber band). Is there some sort of clip that’s hard to see? Please provide me a picture of the hair accessory if possible.

EDIT: And I don’t want to tie my hair and then curl it because I don’t think that’d work. Is there any other options? If not, then I’ll try that.
use a clip or several bobby pins, do not under any circumstances use a tie it will squash your girls and make your hair look thin.
