What is the best way to put a ribbon in my mare’s tail?

I am doing a schooling school with my mare today. She hates other horses and will try to kick and bite, so I have to put a red ribbon in her tail. What is the best way to do this? Her tail is fairly thick and long, and I don’t have a ton of time to braid it.

I’d get a small chunk of the tail near the top and just tie the ribbon around it. If you think that the ribbon wont stay on, tie it around a plaiting band first and then tie this around the small chunk of hair.
