What is a polite way to bow out of a good friends wedding?

I was asked to be in my best friends wedding as a bridesmaid. I was informed not too long ago that I would have to pay for my own dress, but the dress she picked out is a little on the steep side for me due to the fact that I am unemployed and literally have zero income. I did tell the bride about this problem and her and her husband did offer to pay for the dress, but I feel I cannot accept this due to the fact that they are having their own financial problems (even going as far as to place the entire wedding on multiple credit cards.) I am also having problems with the person that she chose to be her maid of honor. We used to be good friends and do not get along anymore, and anytime we are together there is a fight. Basically I would like to bow out of her wedding due to financial problems, and the fact that if I am in the wedding with the person I am having problems with, I have a feeling that there would be problems on a day that should be perfect for my friend.

If you friend has offered to pay for your dress despite the fact that they are having financial difficulties then it sounds like she really wants you to be there. I know that you feel it wouldn’t be right to accept – but I paid for my bridesmaids dresses because they were struggling financially at the time. It meant so much to me to have them there that I happily paid for the dress. I think your friend probably feels the same way about you.
As for the girl who is the maid of honor – both of you need to just suck it up and get along. I know it’s hard, but do it for your friend. You never know – maybe it’s possible that you and this girl can somehow get along…you just need to try.
If you still feel like you want to opt out of the wedding then simply tell her that you don’t have the money to pay for anything and you do not want the financial responsibilty to fall on her. Offer to do whatever else you can for the wedding, but you don’t feel right accepting the dress, etc.
However – it honestly sounds like this girl really wants you there. Think about that a little bit more before you decide to tell her you want to opt out of the wedding.
